Light from Shop Window

Something about this little scene made me chuckle.

I don't know about you, but there's something about it that makes me think of Christmas. Which is odd, seeing as I took it this evening strolling through town in a t-shirt and in the midst of snorting (discreetly) at the shortness of the shorts that the St John's Freshers were wearing as they walked into town in start-of-term clumps.

Quite odd but rather pleasant.

Much like the experience I had just prior to taking this. I had attended a service in the Minster, a special service and legal ceremony confirming the election of a bishop. It was very small - there can't have been more than forty people there and at least fifteen of them were dignitaries - but with all the pomp and circumstance of a state occasion. An archbishop, various Minster clergy, a couple of lawyers and the Vicar-General of the Northern Province, with whom I socialise on a regular basis and so it was rather odd seeing him in his judge's garb. Letters Patent signed for the occasion by the Queen were read, and the ceremony dates from the fourth century AD. It was in Latin until the 1730s, when they decided an English translation would be more accessible. And today's was described as having been 'somewhat modernised'...

Extraordinary. Such a shame that cameras aren't allowed during services, I'd have loved to have shared it with you.
