Mark Atkinson's Monument.
I have often ran past this cairn but never bothered stopping to look at it...
until today.
All I knew about it was that on the map it was called Atkinson monument.
It has two plaques set into it and on one the lettering is very worn but is inscribed-
"Hic jacet Mark Atkinson of Kirkstone Pass Inn, died 14 June 1930 aged 69 years."
Next to it the other plaque inscribed-
"Also his son William Ion Atkinson, died 2nd April 1987 aged 83 years."
The Atkinson family owned and ran the Inn for many years, having purchased it in 1914.
Today the view was stunning and I couldn't help thinking what a great place for your ashes to be scattered.
