55 Million Years Old

On January 7th, 2009, after two days of torrential rain, a massive landslide occurred in Whatcom County, releasing about 500,000 cubic meters of rock rich in fossils.

Today I went on a geologic tour of the affected area and saw many fossils, including these palm tree leaves. We were enveloped in clouds the whole time, so we didn't get to see much of the surroundings, but this website shows what we missed and gives a lot of information about the slide.

I've posted a few photos on Flickr to show why I'd like to go back in better weather.
