Alice in Blipland

Out of Oblivion

OK so not the nicest of blips but I wanted to talk about lime kilns! This one is called Old Pasture and is on the Dales Way just above Coniston. They were used by local farmers to produce calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) which they put on their land to improve it's fertility. The lime neutralised the acidic soil of the uplands. The kilns were layered with limestone and fuel then burnt gradually.

I know I know it's sad I find this stuff interesting but anyway here's a great website all about stuff like this www.outofoblivion.org.uk

And perhaps this explains my blip header.

And that's today's one through the looking glass.
