The Bridge that Flitted
Long time no blip, again!! I am fascinated with architectural artefacts that have gone walkies at the moment, and Duthie Park is FULL of them!! This is the old Mutton Brae footbridge which led from the side of Triple Kirks in Schoolhill down into the Denburn valley long before the river was covered over and UTG was even thought of.
The wee bridge connected the community of Mutton Brae - famous as the birthplace of missionary Mary Slessor - with the river and the bleachgreens on its banks. The Corbie Well stood proudly in the corner below Denburn Terrace, which is now the upper slopes of the gardens below HMT. By 1889, it was all gone, tenements, bridge, community, replaced by the grand new Rosemount Viaduct. But some bright spark thought to put the bridge ... or what's left of it, into Duthie Park, which had been newly laid out on the instruction of Miss Elizabeth Crombie Duthie, as a gift to the city in memory of her brother and uncle, killed in military conflict.
What else flitted to Duthie Park? I'll tell you another time!!
