Anne's Daily Encounters

Leiden Ontzet

The people of Leiden know how to throw a party since the Protestant partisants liberated them from the siege of  over a year by the Spanis troups of Alva in 1574.  The starvation the Spanish had strategically used against the city's inhabitants ended then and the story goes that the city's council shared white bread and herring with the people and a fisherman's son had found some carrots, onions and tunips. And now these foods make the dishes of October 3rd year by year again.

The celebration is local and today with the summerly fair weather it looked like a Brazilian caneval. I will add some more pix later
