Tripod

For years there was nil recognition in Woking for the town's connection with H G Wells' War of the Worlds (he was living in the town when he wrote the book). The Martians landed on Horsell Common about half a mile from where I live. Finally someone must have whispered in the ear of a Woking councillor and the upshot was this artist's impression of a tripod that appeared in the pedestrian precinct in 1998. What a pity it has no working ray gun that could atomise the surrounding office blocks. To bowdlerise Betjeman: "Come friendly Martians and fall on Woking.....
