Cracked
So I think I've got away with the "penny for your thoughts" line, when I realise she doesn't even seem to be hearing what I've said.
"Are you all right, love?" I ask.
This seems to catch her attention. She raises her eyes to look at me, as if the words have snapped her out of a trance.
I have to look away.
You know that old saying, about the eyes being the window of the soul?
The thought that hits me when I look at her eyes is that you could never understand what's behind them. Not in a million years.
And I can feel her gaze drilling into me.
I find myself staring at the cracked window-pane of the pub, and wishing I'd never opened my mouth.
