New year
Today was Jewish new year (Rosh Hashanah -> which mean head of the year). We celebrated it with a big group of family of my boyfriend and two visiting friends of mine. We started with a poem read by the grandmother - about how all we wish for the new year is peace - and countless songs, of which I only know one.
What follows is that we eat all the food on that you see in the picture, these foods symbolise blessings for the new year - that the new year may be sweet, our merits increase, are merits will be plentiful as the seeds of pomegranate, and a weird one: that we will be the head and not the tail. After all these symbolic foods there comes an endless amount of more food and wine.
I think it's a really nice tradition, very different from my 'own' new year, the celebration that I am used to on the 31st of December. We still went to a party afterwards, but the time with family to wish for a good new year is something that I really appreciate.
