What did he say to the cyclist?

Just out of earshot, I couldn't hear what was said to the cyclist. Perhaps it was simply a civil "Good morning" although that wouldn't seem to justify the cyclist ignoring him but perhaps his personal stereo was turned up too high to hear the greeting.

We'll never know as the boatman sailed off without a reply and without knowing he provided me with a blip. Thank you, anyway.
