A Dog's Dinner

Camusfeàrna

Today we went for a walk to Camusfeàrna, the home of Gavin Maxwell and his otters - it's a few miles the house.

This is where he wrote Ring of Bright Water which many regard as the book which first introduced the ideas of ecology to a mass readership. Although a lot of his ideas won't hold up now, for example importing the otters from Iraq, there's no doubting how influencial the book was.

Army officer, arabist, spy, shark fisherman - by all accounts he was a complex and difficult man.

This is the stone marking the grave of Edal the star of the book.
