Rangitoto
Only managed to take this one photo today before the camera battery died!
This is Auckland's largest and youngest volcano - only about 600 years old!
'Rangitoto' translates from Maori to 'bloody sky'. However, the name is actually derived from the phrase:
Te Rangi i totongia a Tamatekapua - the day the blood of Tamatekapua was shed.
This refers to a Maori chief who was injured during a battle on the island.
So, is Rangitoto likely to blow again any time soon...?
Apparently not...but never say never!
