The Twentieth Day....
....in America, travelling too late, looking for somewhere to stay for the night, we saw, in a desert town in darkness where no light was to be seen, a pack of feral dogs roaming the streets and watching us from the shadows of empty buildings and gas stations like the abandoned and desperate children of some disaster, some terrible sadness.
And we left that silent town. But those dogs were just behind me as we drove away and I am home here now, far from them, but not forgiven and wake in the night, or look across the world in the day, and hear their hunger and loneliness and desolation as if they were following me still.
