Mother and daughter in Stone Hill
Today my friend Devorah helped her daughter Shana build a raised bed for the garden while I nosed around the neighborhood. Since October 5th I've been the guest of Shana and her partner Alexis, in Stone Hill, a little village of old stone houses built for cotton mill workers by the Mt. Vernon Mill Company in the middle of the nineteenth century. One of their neighbors in Stone Hill is a writer and historian named Guy Hollyday who conducted several years of oral histories with people who grew up in Stone Hill. Now there's a website that includes much of Guy's work and has historic pictures and a great collection of stories and interviews with former Stone Hill residents.
