Calton

An unusual angle but I'm on a train. Again.

Calton Jail opened in 1817. It was the place for public executions in Edinburgh. Willie Gallacher, imprisoned here during World War 1 for sedition wrote "it is by far the worst prison in Scotland; cold, silent and repellent. Its discipline was extremely harsh, and the diet atrocious". Gone now of course but still under the west car park of St Andrews House lie the bodies of ten executed murderers!
