GET CARTER CAR PARK GATESHEAD
A little piece of history.
GATESHEAD TRINITY SQUARE CAR PARK 1969 - 2010
The 200K multi-storey car park was an example of Brutalist architecture - raw exposed concrete defining the character of the building and it's exterior. It opened on 2nd August 1969. Parking was free and it dominated the skyline until it was demolished in 2010. The views from the roof were said to be spectacular.
It became a part of modern film folklore when it was used in the 1971 Michael Caine film " Get Carter" and was commonly known as " The Get Carter Car Park". It also featured in the film " Purely Belter ".
There was a lot of controversy surrounding the decision to demolish it. It was underused, some thought it ugly and it stood in the way of redevelopment plans for the area. However others thought that it should stay as an example of the Brutalist architecture.
Gateshead Council finally went ahead with the demolition and now the land is awaiting redevelopment. There are plans for shops, a hotel and student accommodation. Can't wait as at the moment Gateshead city centre isn't worth visiting. So many boarded up shops and no heart to the town.
After demolition Gateshead Council sold off bits of the brickwork and my blip show the piece I purchased.
