Flanders Moss

Passing through Thornhill this afternoon I decided to take a short detour for a blip pic of Flanders Moss, long regarded as a beautiful wetland jewel.

Although I have lived in Scotland for many years it is a place I had never visited.

I was not disappointed.

This is a vast extraordinary area of bogland in the Carse of Stirling, between the villages of Thornhill to the north and Kippen to the south.

Formerly passable with difficulty, using boardwalks, during the 18th century much drainage of the land was encouraged by the lawyer, historian and improver Henry Home, Lord Kames but a substantial portion survived this development.

Today Flanders Moss is the largest raised bog in the UK to remain in a predominantly near-natural state and is designated as a National Nature Reserve.

Location: Central Scotland
