Dear Me, how ignorant were we!
At the same time that I got this Sawfish blade from the local Omani's on Masirah Island, off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea, I was taking part in 'Dawn Patrols' to help exhausted turtles get back to the sea. This was after they had laid their eggs during the night.
So on one hand I was a conservationist with a conscience an on the other hand thinking 'Wow, what a great souvenir of my time in Masirah this Sawfish blade is'.
Awful when you think about it but I hadn't actually seen the Sawfish so presumed it had been caught for food.
On the other hand, I refused to purchase a Turtle shell, some nearly 6 feet long, as I knew they were caught, had the shell cut off, and then the rest of the carcass was just discarded at sea. That was a terrible trade and I hope it does not still go on but I expect it does.
