'The Formation of Poetry'

Back on my old stamping ground of Lichfield today, where I enjoyed a leisurely wander in the drizzle. Inevitably, it's changed: lots of shops have closed, while others advertise Closing Down sales. So sad. But I did find something new: this sculpture, as you enter Tesco carpark on foot. It's called The Formation of Poetry and was sculpted by Peter Walker and sponsored by Tesco. It was created to celebrate the tercentenary of Lichfield-born Dr Samuel Johnson's birth and was designed 'with the help fo students from the Friary School'. The book, I presume, represents Johnson's dictionary, with loose pages flying from it. On each page is a word defined by means of a quotation from a classic poem, for example:

ART
'True ease in writing comes from art, not chance,
As those move easiest who have learned to dance' - Pope.

(I've pasted close-up images of a couple of pages, so that you can see them more clearly, while looking at the whole sculpture in the background.) Beyond that, you can just see the three spires of Lichfield Cathedral.
