Undermined
In the early eighteenth century Derbyshire was the dominant producer of lead in Europe, and lead was Britain's second biggest export (after wool). By the end of the century Cornwall had overtaken Derbyshire (using steam power rather than water), iron had overtaken lead and the industry here was in terminal decline. The signs in the landscape last very much longer, as do the many fine stone buildings that the industry funded - particularly in the village of Winster, where I took this on a visit to my Dad.
