Undercover
Tonight I went to a football match for the first time in years and years.
It was Hibs v Celtic at Easter Road in the league cup. Both teams have been showing poor form, so a good performance in a cup game would boost confidence for the league campaign.
Tonight, Celtic won 4-1 after having trailed 1-0 at half-time. The second half performance was a stunning display of clinical finishing, aided somewhat by an abject defensive display from Hibs.
Being a good Tim, I was glad for the Celtic victory, but throughout the game I had to pretend to be a Hibby as I had a seat among the home support! I put on a convincing act, apart from when I leapt out my seat when Gary Hooper narrowly missed a chance in the first half.
I was really impressed with the current Easter Road stadium. It goes without saying that it's transformed hugely since the first time I went there in 1983 (I think) when I saw Hibs beat Morton 4-0.
Even though I'm nominally a Celtic fan, I'd go more often to see Hibs if they weren't so dire. I can't believe folk would pay over 20 quid a week to see them but I suppose true football fans are a faithful, romantic and forgiving lot. That said, their patience is clearly wearing very thin. Not much of an atmosphere inside the stadium, and out-sung by the travelling Celtic support.
A jolly good evening (sorry Barry!).
