One of the youth?
On the side of a building named Youthline House is a very long mural, only a portion of which is shown here.
Youthline was established in the 1970s by a Roman Catholic Priest in collaboration with a physician. Young persons who volunteered were (and are) given training in talking on the telephone to callers seeking support and advice. It was based on the concepts developed previously by the Samaritans and Lifeline, but with a focus on young people's needs.
Over the years since, the organisation has gone through its ups and downs, and more recently a residential service (sort of a time out) gained bad press through low hygiene and drug use, associated with a lack of therapeutic effectiveness.
A real pity as over the almost forty years of its existence there is no doubt that many young persons have benefitted from this non judgemental organisation of peers who can and have helped.
Sometimes things that work well should be content with continuing to do well what they do well, and not feel the need to expand and grow.
