Beacon Pike
Motorists on the M6 can hardly fail to miss the Penrith beacon as they pass the capital of Cumbria.
Situated on Beacon Fell it was built in 1719 out of the fells own sandstone.
Its purpose was to warn the towns folk that Stesedthats Carlisle family were on their way to loot again.
