Good night, Aachen

Today I spent an hour on a nearby hill to enjoy the sunset behind the Lousberg, a hill in Aachen.

Legend has it that it was made by the devil who wanted to dump a bag full of sand onto Aachen as the inhabitants had tricked him while building the cathedral. On his way to Aachen he met a market woman and as he was getting tired from carrying that heavy bag he asked her how far he still had to go. She recognized immediately who was asking and knowing that he was up to no good, she pointed at her worn shoes and explained that they had been new when she set off in Aachen. That put him off and he threw his bag of sand away and went away.

Today this bag of sand is known as the Lousberg, the hill on the outskirts of Aachen. In honour of that cunning market woman the people from Aachen erected a monument on the Lousberg.
