War Graves

A nice bright day if a little fresh and windy. Took myself off to Kiltearn Church (in ruins) on the north side of the Cromarty Firth. Sometimes wonder why so many churches here are in the middle of nowhere - the nearest settlement to this one is Evanton about a mile and a half away. But its location almost on the beach is stunning. Took a number of shots of a huge flock of geese on the shore and in the water with the firth as a backdrop. And also the church itself. So many graves in the burial ground, which is still very much used, had flowers that I wondered if the local Presbyterians had started to recognise the Feasts of All Saints (today) and All Souls (tomorrow). But they were probably plastic so may have been there for ages. Noticed that one memorial with real flowers had wire mesh round them so I take that as a sign that they have problems with deer. The low wall would be no barrier at all. Although not really my favourite image of the day as we're coming up to Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday I've decided to go with this one of a clutch of war graves, all to the same basic design. There was an airfield quite close to here and the three graves facing are all pilots. The one to the right is obviously Canadian, to his left an Australian, and far left an RAF pilot. Several of the graves facing the path to the left are members of the Polish Forces but also a couple of men who served with the Royal Navy.
