Rodents rule

Don't take my picture!

F and I went to the site of the Marconi wireless station where, in 1903, President Roosevelt and King Edward III contacted each other in the first wireless telegram between America and Britain. It was also where distress calls from the Titanic were registered. A chilling thought.

Nothing remains of the station building, but a plaque and a small model version of it in a glass case mark the spot. We gazed out at the Atlantic and Marconi beach, then went for a stroll on the White Cedar Swamp Trail. This is where I spotted my first, and only, red squirrel of the trip. There were a great many birds, too.

It was a bit of a dreich day on the Cape. We motored down to the south coast and took a ferry to Nantucket where it abosultely chucked it down! We took refuge from the rain in the whaling museum, which was really great. The staff were very friendly and chatty, and we enjoyed watching a film about the whales (Nantucket had a huge whaling industry). Then a soggy dash to a cafe, and a squelching dash to find a bed for the night. We found a winner - our room at the Chestnut Inn was fabulous! Hand-woven rugs and oil paintings, and even a rubber duck in the bathroom.

We had a wonderful meal, too, and The Boarding House. Proper food - not boiled or fried. Yum!!
