Earthstar
We went out to look for fungi this afternoon with a patch of Earthstars
being the, er, stars.
They are sensitive to the amount of moisture in the air. When it is dry,
the rays of the star are folded over the top of the fungus, protecting it.
When it starts to rain the rays unfold. This does two things, firstly it
raises the Earthstar up a little from the ground and secondly it allows
the raindrops to hit the centre and puff spores out into the air.
Apparently they are not poisonous but are not particularly edible either
being rather tough.
