Up Cycle in the City
I came across this one day...local coffee shops give you seeds and when you finish your coffee you can plant the seeds in the cup and place them in holders erected by The Green is Gold project. They provide soil too!
Read below for more info and look for them on Facebook!
THE GREEN IS GOLD [GiG] PROJECT
The Green is Gold [GiG] Project aspire to raise awareness on a
simple and very familiar object used everyday in Sydney CBD: the
take-away coffee cup.
At first sight inoffensive to the environment, 'paper' coffee cups are in fact coated with a plastic film that warrants them non-biodegradable.
Furthermore, we use them only once.
The initiative offers a positive and interactive opportunity for the thousands of daily coffee enthusiasts to reuse their coffee cups for planting a range of fragrant and comestible herbs.
In this process, the GiG project is using two main devices: the coffee cup sleeve and the installation on Barrack Street, Sydney CBD.
THE GREEN MODULES INSTALLATION
The installation of Green Modules on Barrack Street provides the framework for people to directly participate in the project by filling their cups with soil supplied on site and place them onto the modules.
Alternatively, the sleeves enable the same reuse of disposable cups in the home or office, promoting the initiative to a wider forum.
Consistent with the aims of the project, the construction of the installation involves both the reuse of waste material and the used of recyclable materials: coffee cups, recycled timber off-cuts and standard reinforcing steel mesh.
