Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa, Trastevere, Rome

Proper Jarvis bars are difficult to find in Italy, mainly because the drinking culture there is entirely different - until recently, drinking alcoholic beverages was something that was seldom done without eating a full meal. However the advent of cheap air travel took more and more Italians to countries with a culture of drinking for its own sake, and real bars began to crop up, starting with a trickle in the 70s that became a torrent in the 90s. Unfortunately, most of these bars were Irish theme bars, which is kind of like claiming Pizza Hut as Italian cuisine. Recently, however, there has been a number of bars opening up offering Italian craft beers and imported specialties. Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa (named after the chant sung to visiting fans in football stadia when the home team is winning comfortably - translating as "What did you come here for?") is one of Rome's prime examples, and the Tipopils was a fine drop. Plus points for the great service - they ask you how many beers you've had when you want to settle up, rather than taking the trouble of counting themselves - and for the dug on the door.
