The Commando Monument
It has been a number of years since I stopped at this spot. To take a picture of the monument itself does not do justice to the setting. It is a wonderful memorial to very brave men.
There was a garden of remembrance which had not been there on my last visit. There were, of course, places laid out in memory of many commandos who had survived their wars and died in old age. But I was struck by how many crosses and poppies were there for casualties of more recent conflicts. When I look back over the last 30 years or so, we seem to have been in an almost permanent state of war somewhere or another.
Will we see peace in my lifetime? I despair of it sometimes.
