Back to the Future

Drummond Place from London Street, Edinburgh, 5pm.

Large.

I'm dead against the clocks going back. GMT is based on the sun being at its zenith at noon at Greenwich. As things stand, we use GMT in the winter when there's less than 12 hours of light and GMT+1 aka BST in summer when there's loads of light. It doesn't actually matter what we use in summer since there's loads of light. But in winter...

Most folks work about 9-5, and the middle of 9-5 is 1pm. To have the sun at its highest at 1pm we need to be on GMT+1. However for hysterical reasons, we put the clocks BACK in winter to ensure that we get bright mornings before most people leave the house and pitch darkness when most people are going home.

Stop it, eh?

(This evening I have no children and have the leisure to take long exposure photies and moan about the nights drawing in. Bliss.)
