Where the poppies come from
This is the poppy factory in Edinburgh. It produces all of Scotlands poppies, including wreaths. The Scottish poppy factory was founded by Lady Haig in 1926, 5 years after the London one as high demand meant that very few poppies reached Scotland. It started with two people snipping poppies out of pieces of paper. Nowadays a machine stamps out the petal shapes but the final poppies are assembled by hand. Repeat 5 million times! The workforce consists mainly of ex-servicemen and the money from the poppy appeal goes to helping ex-servicepeople in whatever way they might need.
A flood from the nearby Water of Leith one year destroyed a million poppies but the workers somehow managed to make up the loss in time!
.
The factory moved to its current position in Warriston Road in 1965.
