Ohio River

The Ohio River starts at Pittsburg, Pennsylvannia with the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and continues 900 miles ending at Cairo, Illinois where it joins the Mississippi. Historically it was a primary means of transportation and the gateway to the west in the westward expansion of the US.

It was also the southern boundry of the Northwest Territory and the dividing line between the free and slave states. As such many slaves with the help of the underground railroad crossed it on their way to freedom in the north.

We walked along the river at Evanston, Indiana. I am not sure what the structure is in the picture, but imagine it has something to do with the water level of the river.
