Norwich Castle Keep
This was a royal castle built to dominate Norwich by the Conqueror. This stone keep was probably built around 1100.
It was captured in the Revolt of 1174 she Bigod Earl of Norfolk captured it. It became a prison in the 13th Century and the saw many executions including Kett after his rebellion in the 16th Century.
It was developed as a gaol in the Georgian era and remained as such until 1887 when bought by the enlightened City Council and turned into a museum which it is now.
The inside has little remaining of the original Norman castle and the outside has been heavily restored, although probably in the manner of the original.
