The eyes have it.
Dear Fynn,
November always holds such mixed memories for me.
November. The month we first met.
November.. The month we got to know each other.
November... The month we said goodbye.
The buzz of voices could be heard as I walked towards the meeting room, I opened the door to see a cluster of women, like bees round a honey pot, clamouring for your attention.
I had never believed in 'the eyes across a crowded room' thing, until that moment. You looked over their heads, directly at me, and although it may sound corny, for a fleeting moment, there was silence.
"Wow!" I thought. "What happened there?"
"Don't go there, don't even think about it" I told myself as I turned from your gaze and walked across the room.
I was returning to my job after six years of working elsewhere.
You? You must be the new kid on the block, I guessed. The only man amongst 30 women, apart from Terry, whom I knew from when I worked here before.
I talked to one or two people I recognised, including Terry, before the meeting. Afterwards I had to nip off smartish, but not before I noticed the buzz of women around you once more - and who could blame them?
"Tell me about Fynn" I asked a colleague the next day.
"Married with 3 little girls. Catholic. Don't even try."
"I meant his role within the department."
"Yeah right." She said, giving me a sideways look.
You and I only met at quarterly meetings, and our conversation always remained purely professional. At the autumn meeting, 3 years after that initial glance the other members of the team cancelled and it was just you and me. We got through the business stuff quickly and then the conversation moved seamlessly away from work on to a more personal level.
You accused me of avoiding you.
"But you're married with 3 girls." I said.
"No, who told you that? I haven't got any daughters. I was a single dad living with my son, back then, but I'm sort of with someone now"
I got up to leave.
"I teach keep fit a couple of evenings, you should come along." He invited.
"O.K. I will"
"Bet you don't" He taunted.
"Bet I do." I grinned.
We shook hands on it. That was our very first touch... Fynn.
