Remembrance Sunday

A row of gravestones in Sandwick Cemetery, near Stornoway. They denote the final resting place of victims of the Iolaire Disaster, in which more than 200 island sailors died. They were on their way home from the First World War on 1st January 1919 when their transport, HMY Iolaire, ran aground just outside Stornoway Harbour in poor weather. Not all gravestones carry a name - some are only Known unto God.
