Multi-element, multi-layer anti-reflection coated lenses are amazing things, along with mass produced optics in general. The low level of chromatic aberation and geometric distortion is very impressive. Having said all of that, f5.6 isn't particularly fast... If only I hadn't sold my f1.4 50mm lens to buy a digital camera all those years ago...
