Saranta Kolones Castle

We visited many ancient sites in Cyprus , Paphos has many large and small sites, this one was down by the harbour. I very carefully positioned myself when I spotted the Church in the distance through the wall sof the castle. Our hotel was beside the church. fine except on Sundays and Saint's days whn the bells ringout from 6:30am. Liked the idea of seeing the old with the new in the background.

The castle was built 1260 AD after the Frankish conquest of Cyprus. It was built on the site of an earlier castle which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1223. It was quite amazing to see these arches so well built to stand for over 3000 years . It makes you wonder when our local High School had the roof torn off by high winds within a month of it being built.
