Chocolates? Maltesers!!

Dear Fynn (Part 4)

I walked past the little tree I planted for you today, and guess what? It's growing Maltesers !!
I bet you're laughing your socks off at me, the country bumpkin, planting an acorn that turns into a chocolate tree! I know you would be looking at it and assessing the potential business opportunity!

I always mark today, in honour of that bizarre day.

You called and said: "It's back. I'm going to the hospital today, you'd better come and see me."

I jumped in a cab and was with you within a couple of hours. The receptionist gave me directions, I burst in to find not only you, but also your mum and a nun!! - all squeezed into the tiny side room.

You looked at me as if to say 'What the ...? I had no idea she was coming' But you actually said:
"This is Sister Mary, she's come to pray for me. I'm waiting for a bed."
"Were planning my funeral what hymns do you think I should have?"

I had learnt by now, never to be phased or to show too much emotion. "Fight the Good Fight." I said flippantly.
"You and your partner are always fighting, and you've fought your Cute Ballistics with all your might."

"Fantastic choice!" You laughed.
We sat in that small, dismal room, with olive green walls and curtains, the four of us for over an hour, with no sign of Sister Mary leaving, and in the end I had to go. I shook the nun's hand, hugged your mum as tight as I dared and then looked straight at you.

You stepped out into the dark green corridor with me. We weren't supposed to touch but we kind of lurched towards each other at the same moment, which resulted in a violent head-butt our final touch.

Turning away from you, and walking down that long, dark corridor was so tough, but then I heard you shout "Missing you already!" And I looked back to see you grinning and waving like crazy...

Buried under the malteser tree is a plaque with an inscription made by hammering a nail point into a metal sheet. I bashed it so hard as I spelled out:

Life is Ephemeral
Love is Eternal

Oh boy, that hammering felt good.

And if you're wondering, I did sing 'Fight the Good Fight' - with all my might.
