In the beginning...
It's been quite a reflective weekend so far. Firstly, there was the delicious (and diet threatening) rediscovery of The Sicilian Pastry Shop on Albert Street but then I came across my photos from the week long holiday I took in Rome with my dad back in 2004 (hahaha, if you think my castle blips are long winded, just wait until I get warmed up on Roman history!!!). Back before the days of blip, the idea was to take in as much as possible every day and so there are so many to choose from, but I have selected 6 of them as I finally delve into the world of the blip archive!
Today's blip is also an archival shot. This is the one that started it all. My first castle, Dunure, taken in 1995 with my first Canon SLR, the EOS 1000. I was so lucky that my parents encouraged my photography even to the extent of turning the bathroom into a darkroom for the development and processing of black and white film (never could quite afford to go colour and it was a lot more complex) which did lead to a number of close run things if I was in the middle of developing!
This is the only surviving original shot from that era. You don't have to look that closely to see the silver halide crystals continuing to oxidise causing the yellowing effect and the silver marks especially around the edge of the ruins which will eventually lead to a complete deterioration of the image. Piss poor processing, I'd say!
So, for that reason I decided it was time to blip it before it got too bad. With the addition of my archive blip of Dunure taken in 2002 (with my first digital camera, the Canon Sureshot G2) and again this year's blip it also completes the circle of my personal history with the castle so far. I'll let you decide whether my photographic technique has improved any over time!
:- )
Hope everyone's weekend has been a good one!
