Helter-skelter

Tilgate Lake.

We were delighted today to see that the lake at Tilgate Park in Crawley is almost back to its former glory. It had been practically dry for probably well over a year, as work was carried out to rebuild its dam as part of the Upper Mole [River] Flood Alleviation Scheme.

Beyond the trees in the distance is a children's playground, Nature Centre, Walled Garden with all sorts of animals and displays, a cafe, arts & crafts units and an education centre. We love it there, especially as it's one of the few places we know where the kids can ride their bikes.

Other work was carried out at the same time and it was a bit of a shock to see just how much woodland was being cut down but, invaded by rhododendrons and disease, it had to be done. The area near the dam has a new footpath with seating which looks a bit stark at the moment (and it's a bit disorientating because it looks so different now!) but hundreds of new trees of many different species have been planted, as well as new reed beds, and I think it's a vast improvement in many ways.

It seems (to my inexpert mind) that it has been a good example of human needs (ie. flood protection for the surrounding town) being met while preserving the ecology and biodiversity of the site.

The council is currently looking for charities or private companies to take over the management of certain areas, including the lakes and woodlands. Local residents are obviously concerned that this will mean high entry charges or it turning into some kind of theme park. Despite the council's reassurances, only time will tell.
