Clay Cup
A heard a moving talk today about work amongst the Dalit's in India. Through education, communities are being offered a hope for the future. Dalit Freedom Network stands with these people in their quest for freedom, justice and human dignity.
I was given this clay cup a while back, and copy below the message inside it :-
The Dalits are a broken and oppressed people born outside India's cast system. They are known as outcasts or untouchables.
'Dalit' comes from the ancient Marathi language and means 'ground' or 'broken' in pieces.
The reality of this brokenness is seen in this small clay cup. These cups are used in eating places across India and are provided exclusively for Dalits.
They are destroyed after use to ensure no customer from a higher caste will use, and be 'contaminated' by a Dalit's uncleanness.
