The Bede House, Higham Ferrers
Bede meaning prayer. This is a medieval dwelling founded by Henry Chichele as a dwelling place for twelve poor men of the parish and one woman to act as housekeeper. The Bedesmen were given one penny per day, free fuel and a clothing allowance. In return they had to live by a timetable of prayer and manual work and abide by a strict set of rules. Bedesmen lived here until the 18th century and the building is now used as a community hall.
