RIP Anne McCaffrey
Last night I heard that the author, Anne McCaffrey had died. She was one of the first authors of science fiction and fantasy that I'd ever read; I've read and loved her novels for over 20 years. (Eek, that makes me feel old!)
These are some of my books - I've collected most of her books from second hand bookshops and charity shops, and they take pride of place in my bookcase(s). Dragonsong was the first one I ever read, set in the dragon-filled world of Pern. Behind that, Restoree was the first book she wrote in 1967; behind that is Dragonflight, the first book she wrote set in the world of Pern.
She wrote many series -for example, the Crystal Singer series where mountains of crystal were cut for telecommunications using cutters tuned by the sound of a voice, the Rowan series where spaceports were aided by telepaths to lift and guide their transport. All through these novels were strong characters - and most of them female. Anne McCaffrey herself was the first woman to win a Hugo award for fiction. Her imagination lead me to reading so many books, so the news of her death left me rather saddened.
I leave with her words from her biography:
"My hair is silver, my eyes are green and I freckle; the rest is subject to change without notice."
