Track Cycling

The Tesco Tunnel in Canonmills, Edinburgh. This is now part of National Cycle Route 75 which stretches across Scotland from Edinburgh in the east to Tarbet on the west coast.

The plaque reads "Rodney Street (Heriothill) Tunnel. Opened 1847. Closed 1968. Re-opened in 2009 by Sustrans, City of Edinburgh Council & Scottish Government" - but since there's a Tesco at one end, I've only ever heard it called the Tesco Tunnel.

You can see what this looked like 100 years ago in this picture. Wide enough for 2 lines hence its squat shape.

This was once a small but impressive part of the line from Leith to Canal Street - aka Princes Street, as described on the Scotland Street Tunnel page on Subtarranea Britannica, an interesting site in itself.

Apart from that, I had a half-shut-knife sort of day after being up far too late doing nerdy things with Oracle logs. Hopefully we'll get a successful test with new settings tomorrow and I won't have to do that again for a while.
