Arncliffe - one of God's own villages

Today we enjoyed a visit to my favourite Dales village - Arncliffe in Littondale. A perfect village arranged around a village green complete with a perfect unspoiled village pub, The Falcon, a set of village stocks, and a fine village church sitting on the bank of the river.

Inside the church there is a list of the men of Arncliffe who fought at Flodden Field in 1513, complete with an inventory of the weapons that each man carried:

Arncliffe
John Knolle, able horse and harnish'd (armoured)
Oliver Knolle, a bowe.
Robert Tylson, a bille.
William Firth, a bowe.
Richard Clemenger, a bille.
Peter Prass, a bille.
John Carlyll, a bille.
Richard Atkinson, a bowe
John Wilson, a bowe.
John Atkinson, a bowe.

The Battle of Flodden Field was fought in the county of Northumberland in northern England on 9 September 1513, between an invading Scots army under King James IV and an English army commanded by the Earl of Surrey. It ended in victory for the English army, and was the largest battle (in terms of numbers) ever fought between the two nations.
