And a little Poppet.....
So finally this is the third canine in the house - our little Poppet.
When Laurel died and Fleurie found herself alone she started to fret and lose weight. It was really sad to see. So we knew she needed a companion. As we were not ready for another dane at that time we decided (in our infinite wisdom) to offer a home to a little rescue something or other.
What a sad business going round rescue centres is. I wanted to bring them all home - that very instant. The kennels do their best but it is simply no life for a dog stuck in a cell with no company.
After a few visits to various homes we ended up at Viking Oak Rescure Centre near Sevenoaks. There were two dogs that I loved the look of - a Pharoah Hound and a little black and tan mongrel. So we went back with Fleurie to decide.
Sadly the hound was still entire and spent the entire time in Fleurie's company trying to shag her - so she got a little upset, understandably really.
When she met the black and tan mongrel it was much more civilised and so she came home with us. We did intend on returning and getting the Pharoah Hound as well because it broke my heart to leave him behind - but my sensible head ruled the day.
I hope he found a lovely home somewhere.
When we got Poppet she was very, very thin and had clearly just had puppies as her teats were dragging on the floor. She was a little nervous and growly at people, especially children, but she and Fleurie got on famously. At least they did.....until Merlot turned up. With the presence of a male the two girls started to get quite bitchy towards each other and ended up having several very nasty and very bloody fights. Great Danes are big but she is no match for a feisty little terrier that rips at her jowls with razor sharp little teeth!!
They are fine while we are around but I have to seperate them at night and when we go out. Which is a shame.
