walking in the city

By inthecity

A rare lengthy entry

"The Skyline of Toronto spells Don Valley Products"

"The sky-soaring pen of building construction dips its trowel-like nib into the bottomless well of Don Valley Products and records in enduring masonry their claim to the ever-changing skyline of this Canadian Manhattan."

Shortlist of works: Osgoode Hall; Oakwood Collegiate; University of Toronto; Parliament Buildings; Toronto General; Whitney Block; Sick Children's Hospital; T. Eaton's Company Stables; Pantages Theatre; Massey Hall; St. Michael's Hospital; The Victor Mission; Shae Theatre; Continental Insurance; Royal Bank; City Hall

Back to the old brickworks for the Saturday farmers' market. I clocked it--a 40-minute walk through industrial lands, criss-crossed by CN tracks, service roads, DVP ramps and a cycling trail. Worth every step.

The Merchants of Green Coffee were there, so I picked up a pound of their brickworks blend, roasted on Thursday. The sprouts and greens I got from the hothouse vendors will provide a week's worth of holy freakin luxury salads (see below for my latest concoction, if you dig it like that). Tomorrow I'll roast up the heirloom carrots, mini onions, and brussel sprouts right off the stalk.

Hope your weekend's bricktastic.

Luxury Creamy Green Salad

Here's what I did; improvise liberally.
10 minutes prep time
.

> Bruise and tear the greens into a large bowl.
(Fire Blend®: Arugula; Southern Giant Curled; Garnet Giant Mustard; Suehlihung; Deep Purple Mustard; Golden Frill; Beet greens; Red Saladbowl Lettuce)
(Autumn Blend®: Arugula; Chard; Baby Kale)

> Sprinkle with sun-dried tomatoes, chopped.

> Shower with half a lime, squeeeeezed.

> Add half a shallot, finely sliced.

> Scoop on half a ripe avocado, using that ever-so handy 'criss-cross slice and turn inside out' method.

> Drizzle with olive oil.

> Dash with green tea salt.
(grind equal parts: sea salt; sesame seeds; green tea leaves)

> Shakey-shake with a little curry powder.

> Crumble in a few walnuts

> Dot with mustard.

> Top with sprouts.
(Fusion Blend®: Broccoli; Radish; Red clover; Alfalfa)

> Feast on it. Let your eyes roll back, it's okay.

PS. I sliced in pastrami from pasture-fed cows raised on a local Mennonite farm. Meat? That's your call.
