Let your light shine
Dundee and the Tay Road Bridge from the Law.
Not the greatest picture or the right viewpoint for what I want to say but the best I could do in the circumstances, and a wise man once said that if a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly.
Yesterday we heard that a former member of our church had taken her own life, and this morning her daughter came to ask me to take the funeral. She was a person with deep psychiatric issues and none of us want to imagine the dark places they took her to. It left those of us who were closest to her asking ourselves questions. Were we as good friends as we could have been?
Today many people were left speechless by the similar death of Gary Speed, a successful man who had everything, and seemed untroubled.
There are many questions we can't begin to answer.
But I quoted this in my sermon this morning (prepared before any of this) -
"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:14-16).
That has a very specific meaning and challenge for Christians, but for all of us - let your light shine, let it bring joy into somebody's life. Their darkness is not my responsibility - but my light is, and it does make a difference.
