'Sausages'

The curly dried up things hanging from the door frame looked like sausages, but they might have been shrivelled up massive chillis, or curly shoes or hats for court jesters.

She seemed quite keen to get past them as fast as possible anyway.

Google says the sign says 'quality of manuscripts'. Does that mean it sells high class documents?... maybe Google translator could do with some context.
